The Centre for Bioinformatics has a modest library with a stock of 1800+ books (as of March 2011) and continues to grow. The centre has funds to acquire books worth a few lakhs every year and students and researchers are encouraged to select and suggest books to enrich the library collection. The library has introduced a novel public tagging, as modern information scientists recognize this as a very valuable meta knowledge associated with knowledge resources. Recall scribblings and making margin remarks you made in the library books? Well, CBi library users are now invited to do it, not on the body of the books, but on a public tagging sheet that is affixed to every book. Up-gradation to a fully automated and digitally secured library is expected to complete in 2010.

Bookface

Bookface is an innovative library management application which merges the features of social networking and a common library management software. It is like a face book of books and library users. Here users can tag, like and comment on their favorite books. They can browse through the books through anywhere. They can maintain their bookshelves and thus archive their reader life. This innovative software is aimed at transforming the library to a futuristic people-centric library. Sookshmatech, a software firm in Technopark, developed the software.

Homepage of bookface is a visual feast to everyone. It energizes the members to read the books. Reading count is automatically recorded in bookface. Everyone could know the quantity of stock books, available books and issued books. There are various filtering options included in bookface to search books easily.

RFID Facility

Issue & return process are done through RFIC system. By this system, users can save their time. Here librarian has a monitoring role in this process.

Library Collections

SIUCEB library has a well equipped collection of books, thesis, dissertation, reference books etc. The library has 1979 books (As on 2011 October 10) covering a wide range of subjects. The library is enriched by exclusive gift collections from Dr. AchuthSankar S. Nair (Director, SIUCEB), Dr. Pawan K. Dhar (Director, Centre for Systems & Synthetic Biology), Dr. Oommen V. Oommen (CSIR-Emeritus Scientist, Department of Zoology & SIUCEB). The book operations of the library are fully computerized and the on-line public access catalog (OPAC) is accessible from anywhere from the world.
