Adaptive v. Non-adaptive Video Study

This study is currently in progress in ASISSTments. The purpose of this study is to observe if there is a difference in adaptive tutoring compared to non-adaptive tutoring.

Problem Set

Depend on if the student is assigned to the controlled group or the experimental group. Their first question will be as following respectively.

If the student is in the controlled group, they are told that this experiment is a skill builder and that they must answer 3 correct in a row to continue.

A preview of the problem set can be seen here.

Control

In the controlled group, the students are not provided with any visual or text assistance beside the questions.

Experiment

There are two experimented group. One is with adaptive assistance and one is with non-adaptive assistance.

A student in the experimented group is asked a conditional question, which is also counted toward the overall amount of correct answer. If they get it right, they are sorted into the non-adaptive group. Otherwise, they are sorted into the adaptive group.

From this point onward, there is no further difference between the non-adaptive group and the controlled group. The adaptive group, however, are further divided into two subcategory: visual assistance and text-based assistance. The students are sorted into these two subgroups randomly.

The adaptive group is provided with some assistance in the form of a small quiz. The student must answer 4 correct in a row to continue.

The conditional question

A text-based quiz question.

A visual quiz question.
