Homework completion rates increased when parents were connected.

This study demonstrates the ability of an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) to increase parental engagement in student learning. A parent notification feature was developed for the web-based ASSISTment ITS that allows parents to log into their own accounts and access detailed data about their students’ performance.

Parent Notification

Parents had an account with a dashboard.

Business as Usual

Teachers had to contact parents in the control condition using their normal procedures. Teacher were not restricted from contacting parents they just did not have the features to help them out.

Parents received automated e-mails prompting them to log in and check on their child's progress.

Teachers were able to send personalized e-mails right from the item report.
