Remove batteries from all technology handheld units such as calculators & remote controls when not in use (especially during summer months)

Separate all batteries from touching each other end to end or touching any metal (wrap in plastic wrap or placed cross-wise in a non-metal container -- the kind chocolate chip cookies come in is ideal)

Use a label and place the date on a set of batteries

Store batteries in a cool place -- a refrigerator is ideal

Check for acid leakage before using batteries again
