Thermodynamics

This unit bundles student expectations relating to how matter reacts with changing temperature, how thermal energy moves, how thermal energy is controlled and utilized, and the limitations on using thermal energy to do work. Students refine their knowledge of the law of conservation of energy and how it relates to the laws of thermodynamics.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Take a paper and divide it in thirds.

2. Label the top of the sections: "Conduction, Convection" and "Radiation".

3. Watch the video above on thermal energy transfer and take notes on the different ways thermal energy moves from one object to another.

4. Next, take a sheet of paper and divide it in fourths.

5. You are going to make an "odd man out" game. Draw 3 examples of one type of energy transfer in 3 of the boxes. In the fourth box, draw a different type of energy transfer.

6. You may exchange with a neighbor and see if they can guess which is the "odd man out".

7. Show me and see if I can guess!

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the video above.

2. Write 3-5 complete sentences summarizing different ways energy can be transferred.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the tutorial on the First Law of Thermodynamics.

2. As you watch, create a bubble map about the First Law of Thermodynamics. Be sure to include any relevant equations and what the variables in the equation represent.

3. Make sure to also note how temperature is related to heat.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the tutorial on the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

2. As you watch, create a bubble map about the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Be sure to include any relevant equations and what the variables in the equation represent.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the tutorial on the Third Law of Thermodynamics.

2. As you watch, create a bubble map about the Third Law of Thermodynamics. Be sure to include any relevant equations and what the variables in the equation represent.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the tutorial on the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics.

2. As you watch, create a bubble map about the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. Be sure to include any relevant equations and what the variables in the equation represent

ASSIGNMENT:

1) See me for a copy of thermodynamics calculations.

ASSIGNMENT:

Physics Thermodynamics PA

Draw five examples of thermal energy transfer that have occurred in your day so far. Identify the method of transfer in each example and explain your reasoning. Identify one of the laws of thermodynamics that each example demonstrates and explain your rationale.
