Classification

This unit focuses on the classification of organisms using taxonomy. Students develop a definition of taxonomy and an understanding of the importance of taxonomy to the scientific community. Students use cladistics and dichotomous keys to categorize organisms into a hierarchical system based on similarities and differences. Students compare the characteristics of the major taxonomic groups: archaea domain, bacteria domain, protist kingdom, fungi kingdom, plant kingdom, and animal kingdom.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the video above.

2. See me for a copy of cards that demonstrates the hierarchical classification system we use to classify organisms.

3. You need to be able to correctly sort the cards using a hierarchical system before moving on.

4. Write 3-5 sentences summarizing the hierarchical classification system we use.

ASSIGNMENT:

1) Make the brochure listed below. Paper is on the cart in the front of the room.

Six Kingdoms Brochure

Objective: You will demonstrate your knowledge of the six kingdoms of organisms by gathering information (from your class notes, the internet, and the biology textook) and creating a brochure on the six kingdoms in which scientists classify organisms.

Your brochure will be organized as follows:

  1. Making the Brochure- the brochure is made of one piece of paper. Fold the paper into thirds.
  2. Cover- your cover should have a picture and an appropriate title. Your name should be written in the bottom right corner of the cover.

3. Inside the Brochure- inside your brochure, you should have one section for each of six kingdoms. Use the front and back of the paper. Since there will only be five open sections left in the brochure, you should place both the Eubacteria Kingdom and Archaebacteria Kingdom in the same section.

You must include the following information for each of the six kingdoms:

  • Are the organisms unicellular (one cell) or multicellular (many cells) or both?
  • Do they have a nucleus in their cells?
  • Do they make their own food or get it from other organisms?
  • Other important characteristics
  • A picture or a diagram of sample organisms (one or a few)

Important vocabulary

Unicellular - made of only 1 cell, small organisms

Mulitcellular - composed of more than one cell

Prokarytic - orgnaisms without a nucleus inside their cells

Eukaryotes - orgnaisms with a nucleus inside their cells

Autotroph - you can make your own food (like plants)

Heterotorph - must eat other organisms for energy

sexual/asexual- exchanges genetic material or makes a clone

motile/sessile- moves or is anchored in one spot

If you aren't sure what these terms mean, please look them up and discuss them with me!

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Click on the link above for some practice classifying organisms in to their kingdoms based on their characteristics.

2. See me for a copy of the data table you will fill out as you complete the lab.

3. Complete the lab following the directions on the left side of the screen to fill in your data table.

4. When you are done, click on the journal and answer the 3 journal questions on your own paper using complete sentences.

kingdoms microscope lab table

ASSIGNMENT: You will be using the microscope to help identify the kingdom different organisms belong to.

1. See me for a copy of the table above for the microscope lab.

2. Then, get a set of samples from me to examine and classify using the microscope.

3. When you've finished, write 3-5 sentences on which traits you used to classify the samples.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the video above on using dichotomous keys to classify organisms. Also pay attention to binomial nomenclature, or the two-name system used to name organisms.

2. Then, see me for the shark dichotomous key practice.

1. When you're done, see me and you will be given a set of organisms for the Museum project.

2. Also see me for the project requirements.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch the video on Carl Linnaeus.

2. Create an epitaph that describes his contributions to taxonomy.

You are done with the unit! See me for a fun classification game if you're done early.
