Animal Systems

This unit focuses on the interactions that occur among animal systems. Students describe the interactions among systems that perform the functions of regulation, nutrient absorption, reproduction, and defense from injury or illness. While investigating nutrient absorption, students summarize the role of microorganisms in maintaining health. While investigating defense from illness, students summarize the role of microorganisms in disrupting health, describe viral reproduction, and describe the role of viruses in causing diseases. Students analyze the levels of organization in organisms and relate the levels to each other.

ASSIGNMENT:

1) See me for a copy of the levels of organization cards.

2) Watch the video and assemble the cards in the correct order from smallest to largest.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Get a copy of the fill-in notes that accompany the Body Systems video.

2. Watch the video on the Human Body Systems and complete the fill-in notes.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Open the web link below and scroll down to the matching section.

2. See if you can match the organs to their corresponding system. You may use your notes.

3. Next, try to match functions with the systems.

4. Last, match the systems interacting in each scenario.

5. You can practice until you can do these without notes/assistance.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Open the link above and see how long you can help your person maintain homeostasis and stay well.

2. Then, write 4-5 sentences about which body systems were helping her maintain homeostasis and their roles.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch one of the videos above on cellular specialization.

2. As you watch, create a bubble map about Cellular Specialization with at least 4 bubbles. Your map may include drawings, if you wish.

3. When you are done with this, see me for some slides of specialized animal cells.

4. Draw what you see under the microscope for each sample, using color as applicable.

5. Write a 4-6 sentence summary about your observations of the differences between the different types of animal cells.

*Remember that when you use the microscope, you should always start with the lowest power objective lens first.

ASSIGNMENT:

1) Get a copy of the viruses fill in notes from me.

2) Watch the video on viruses. As you watch, complete the fill in notes.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Open the link on the left side of the screen that says "Body Systems".

2. Play the "Conflict Immunity" Game.

3. Describe how your body's immune system helps maintain homeostasis in a 4-6 sentence summary.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Use the link above to explore pathogens that make humans sick. You will be diagnosing three patients.

2. Get a copy of the data table your will be filling in from me before you start the lab.

3. Complete the data table as you diagnose your patients.

4. Answer journal questions 1, 2, 4 and 6 using complete sentences below the data table.

ASSIGNMENT:

1) Read the news article above on vaccinations.

2) Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph response. Do you support parents opting out of immunizing their children? Why or why not?

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Play Endocrine Ed games above.

2. Describe, in 3-5 complete sentences, how your endocrine and circulatory systems work together to help regulate things like blood sugar and sleep in your body.

ASSIGNMENT:

See me for the body system interactions project.

ASSIGNMENT:

1) See me for a copy of the bacteria growth virtual lab.

2) Complete the virtual lab by opening the link above and following the instructions on the left side of the screen.

3) Answer the journal questions on your paper with the data table that you received from me.
