Thermochemistry

This unit bundles student expectations that introduce thermochemistry, the study of the transfer of heat energy, in physical changes and chemical reactions. Students use calorimetry to investigate the amount of heat absorbed or released during a phase change and in chemical reactions using the law of conservation of energy. They perform stoichiometric calculations of enthalpy changes.

ASSIGNMENT 1:

1. Watch the video above on energy.

2. Create a bubble map on Energy and Chemistry.

ASSIGNMENT 2:

1. Watch the videos above.

2. Create a bubble map over the Law of Conservation of Energy.

ASSIGNMENT 3:

1. Watch the video above on heat versus temperature.

2. As you watch the video, create a double-bubble map comparing and contrasting heat and temperature.

ASSIGNMENT 4:

1. Take a paper and write "Heat Transfer" at the top, and then divide the paper in thirds.

2. At the top of each section write "Conduction", "Convection" and "Radiation".

3. Then, use the video to take notes on each type of heat transfer. Include a drawing of each.

ASSIGNMENT 5:

1. Watch the video above on the right.

2. Complete the practice above on the left on your own paper. You may draw and take a picture, then email me.

ASSIGNMENT 6:

1) Open the link above and complete the virtual lab.

2) Copy the phase-change diagram for each substance and label the different sections.

3) Answer the journal questions on your own paper using complete sentences.

ASSIGNMENT 7:

1. Watch the videos on endothermic vs. exothermic reactions.

2. Create a double-bubble map comparing and contrasting Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions. Make sure to include how change in enthalpy (Delta H) varies for the two types of reactions, and pay attention to units.

ASSIGNMENT: 8

1. Watch the video on heat calculations.

2. Create a bubble map over heat calculations. Make sure to include the equations and what each variable represents!

3. Then, open the practice above on the right. Complete and send me your work and answers.

ASSIGNMENT 9:

1. Watch the video above for a rough idea about how to find specific heat of a metal doing a lab.

2. You will complete the lab virtually.

3. Visit the website below to complete the lab: https://media.pearsoncmg.com/bc/bc_0media_chem/chem_sim/calorimetry/Calor.php

4. Complete the lab and write 10 complete-sentence observations on a googledoc. Share with me.
