Lab Safety

A system is a collection of interactive, interrelated, or interdependent cycles, structures, and / or processes (consider the classroom, laboratory, and notebook as systems; safety being one parameter).

  • How are the components and parameters of a system defined?

Patterns of constancy and change in systems can be observed, measured, and / or modeled (given the classroom, laboratory and notebook are systems, patterns of protocols and procedures may emerge).

  • Why is it important to observe, measure and / or model patterns of a system?

A system can be described by its basic properties and analyzed in terms of interactions (consider the classroom, laboratory, and notebook as systems).

  • In what ways do interactions affect the basic properties of a system?

Scientific decision-making is a way of answering questions about systems within the natural world.

  • How does scientific decision-making affect the quality of our lives?

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Choose one of the videos above about lab safety.

2. As you watch, use a bubble map to list the characteristics of a safe lab environment.

3. Then, add to your thinking map any other characteristics that weren't covered in the video.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. After watching the video, use a thinking map to list the characteristics of a safety data sheet.

2. Compare yours to another student's. Add any characteristics that they listed that you may have left off of your map.

3. When you've complete this, you may either:

a) Find a safety data sheet for a material you have in your home. What precautions should you take when using the substance? Was anything surprising about the substance's potential hazards? Write 4-5 complete sentences about it. OR

b) Draw a picture of a class completing a lab. Include as many safety violations as you can in your drawing. OR

c) Find a news article about students hurt during a lab experiment. Critique the situation and what precautions weren't taken ahead of time to prevent the incident. Write 4-5 complete sentences.
