Find 3 ways you can play the game more or less using dice to help your knowledge of place value in math.
You will need: dice and something to make notes on (whiteboard, notebook or notes app on your iPad).
With a partner roll 2 die. They make the tens and ones of a number.
Then, the other partner has to predict if they will roll a larger or smaller number.
After that, they roll their die and decide if they are correct and explain how they know. Keep playing to find the winner after 6 rounds.
The second option of more or less is this fun addition game.
You will need: dice and something to make notes on (whiteboard, notebook or notes app on your iPad).
To play this game, make two teams (this could even be partners). Each team takes turns rolling a dice. The goal of the game is to add up numbers to reach as close to 101 as possible, but without passing this number.
When you have rolled your die, you can multiply the number on the dice by 10, or leave it as is. For example, you might roll a five and change it to 50. Then, you might roll a six and leave it as six, adding it to the 50 to get 56.
Each team continues rolling to see which team gets closer to 101 without passing it.
The third option of this game is all about rolling and rounding numbers.
You will need: dice and something to make notes on (whiteboard, notebook or notes app on your iPad). Your number of dice depends on the place value you are working on, for example if you are working with hundreds you need 3 die, if you are working with thousands you will need 4 die etc.
The first person rolls all of there dice at the same time and builds a number with it.
The second person does the same and then each person rounds his or her number to the highest place value. For example, a roll of 5, 3, 7 could make the number 753, which would be rounded to 800.
Finally, compare the rounded numbers and the highest correctly rounded number wins.
