"How long will I get for break and lunch each day?"
There are two breaks during the day, Break 1 and Break 2 and they are both 30 minutes long.
"How will I know where to go?"
You will be given a timetable on your first day which shows your lessons for each day of the week. Each classroom has a unique code so you know which area of the school you need to get to.
"Will I be in a mentor group with my friends?"
Each mentor group is made up of pupils from year 7 so there will be other year 7 pupils but not necessarily your friends from your primary school. This is one way that you will make new friends.
"Where can I leave my coat or PE kit?"
Pupils can rent a locker. You will need to pay a £5 deposit, which will be returned to you at the end of the year [or earlier if you do not need a locker any more] when you give the key back if the locker is clean and not damaged.
"What do I do if I am late?"
You will need to sign in with a member of staff in reception. This will be recorded and there will be consequences for pupils who are late more than once.
"Do I have to wear my blazer all day?"
Yes, pupils are always required to wear full school uniform. If you need to take your blazer off for any reason you must ask for permission. In some lessons such as Food and Nutrition you will be told to take your blazer off for safety or hygiene reasons.
"How do I know which lessons I have every day?"
You will be given a printed copy of your timetable. This will tell you the subject, the room it will be taught in and the teacher’s name.
"I need to go to a medical appointment– what do I do?"
You will need to bring in a note or your parents can contact school to tell us when you need to leave and why. You will then need to sign out in reception. If you can return to school, you will need to sign in again.
"How will I be rewarded for good work or behaviour?"
You will earn points on “Classcharts” which your parents/ carers can see on an app for their phone/ tablet or computer. The points add up and you can earn bronze, silver and gold awards.
"Can I ride my bike to school?"
We encourage pupils to ride a bike to school, rather than to come by car, if it is possible. You will need to lock your bike securely in the bike shelters.
"Am I allowed to leave the school site during the day?"
Unless you are collected by a parent or carer, pupils are not allowed to leave the school site.
"If something is worrying me who should I speak to?"
The best person is your mentor because you will see them at the start of everyday. But you can also go to Pupil Support or tell any member of staff who will help you.
"What equipment do I need to bring to school?"
School will provide exercise books and textbooks for you. You will need to bring:
a strong school bag to carry books
a pencil case containing pens, pencils (including a 2B pencil for Art), ruler,
rubber, coloured pencils)
A scientific calculator
You should make sure that all your equipment is named.
"What else do I need to bring to school?"
You will need to be organised and check your timetable every night. You will need to bring your books and equipment for every lesson, but sometimes you will need other equipment such as PE kit or ingredients for Food Technology.
"Can I bring a packed lunch to school?"
Pupils can bring a packed lunch to school and you may also want to bring a snack to eat at break.
"What should I do if I have any concerns at all?"
Mentors should always be the first person that pupils and parents contact. Often mentors will be able to answer questions and offer help and support but if not they will be able to direct the issue to the correct person.
