Drawing Unit Artist
Kerry James Marshall is an American artist and professor who is known for his paintings/drawings of Black Figures. He was born October 17th, 1955 and is currently 67 years old. His art style is mainly contemporary art, and focuses on aspects of African American vernacular existence. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and does all of his work there.
Kerry considered illustrating children's books for his career but ended up just sticking to his drawings. Kerry ended up received a genius grant for creative works
His lines are scribbly and short, and he uses different values in his lines to create different shades in his drawings. He also uses thicker lines to draw in the skin of his figures, who are mostly black and therefore need a deeper value. The pose that this figure is in is very plain, and this helps us understand that the point of his drawings and paintings are normally focused on the person themselves
Yes, we like most of his work. Some of it is very shady and creepy looking, so some of his works we don’t like. We like his art style and the way he uses value to increase the depth of his works!
