The smoke from the fire embeds itself into the clay creating smokey, black, grey, and even yellow colors across the clay depending on how long the piece was exposed and how much smoke was surrounding the piece. That’s why there isn’t just one color all around. Glazing is a much different process and thus results in a different outcome. When you glaze you can pour or paint the glaze onto the clay surface. Glazing comes out as solid colors or interesting patterns depending on different layering techniques and if 2 different glazes are used.
I wish I waxed my form more because I’m not quite satisfied with its shine. In my opinion, it could be shinier.
We waxed the forms after firing to produce a clean shine and to add a little more pop to the form. Also, a more practical reason is to protect the form from damages that could occur as well as securing the smokey colors even more.
