Background Info
Eliot Porter (1901 - 1990) was born in Winnetka, Illinois - a Chicago suburb. He was the second of five kids. He was given his first camera when he was 9 or 10 in 1911. He challenged himself to try and photograph birds in both his hometown and his family's summer home in Great Summer Head Island in Penobscot, Maine. He graduated Harcard in 1923 with a BS in chemical engineering and a medical degree in 1929. Carreer wise, he started off as a biochemical researcher at Harvard but he couldn't give up his love if photography. He startes his photography career sometime in the 1930s.Â
What or Who Influenced
While also getting a camera in 1911, Eliot Porter got introduced to acclaimed artists Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams in the mid-1930s. From then, he found himself photographing landscapes in northern New England more. While he photographed in black and white like Alfred Stieglitz did, he took up color photography in 1939.
Why I Chose Him
I chose Eliot Porter because I loved how he took nature pictures and had color really pop. I feel like I tend to be drawn to art that has pops of color or nature so the fact that Eliot Porter had both in his work was what made me want to choose him.
