SPANISH PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The high school Spanish program offers five levels of Spanish instruction including two dual credit courses offered in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.. Dedicated students will attain proficiency in the skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Students learn language in the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its cultures. Students will speak, read, write, and listen in Spanish in all classes at their appropriate level. Colleges and universities may grant students college credits for their high school study if they earn at least a "B" in their college course work beyond the first year of Spanish. Travel programs to Spanish-speaking countries may be offered to students interested in exploring the language and culture more in depth.
You’ve chosen the right path! Spanish I is an introduction to the Spanish language. You will learn basic vocabulary and basic grammar structures. Speaking, listening, writing, and reading will be emphasized. You will leave Spanish I with an understanding of the geographical and cultural variety of the Spanish-speaking world.
Prerequisite: Spanish I with a grade of C or better
You’re well on your way! Celebrate language and culture. In Spanish II you will build on what you’ve learned in Spanish I. You will have ample opportunity to improve your speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills through a variety of activities and projects designed to help you acquire new vocabulary and understanding of Spanish grammar.
Prerequisite: Spanish II with a grade of C or better
Your cultural and linguistic journey continues. You’re persevering – good for you! Spanish III is a formal language class that reviews the basics and presents some of the more complex structures of the language. Learn to listen, speak, read, and write better in Spanish! Class is conducted in Spanish. Students are expected to ask questions, give comments, and converse with others in the target language. By practicing regularly, you will acquire a better command of key vocabulary and grammar. In addition, you will explore the rich Spanish culture, geography, history, art, literature, and customs of Spanish-speaking peoples.
Prerequisite: Spanish III with a grade of C or better
You’re almost there! Adventure awaits! Language communication and cultural objectives are pursued with the emphasis being on Latin America. You will prepare for the continuation of advanced studies at the college level as well. Reading supplements such as short stories, readers, and newspaper/magazine articles as well as authentic films in Spanish language are studied to build cultural awareness and improve reading and listening comprehension. Class is conducted in Spanish and students are expected to ask questions, give comments, and converse with others in the target language.

This Partners In Education (PIE) course—Spanish 321: Advanced Spanish Language Study I—is offered in association with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is for the dedicated language thrill-seekers only! Take advantage of the opportunity to fine-tune your Spanish skills through a variety of activities, presentations, and projects while you prepare for the college placement exam and a major/minor in Spanish. This is a thorough study of the structure of the language. Practical application through conversation and composition allows you to hone your advanced Spanish grammatical skills. Join us in Spanish 321 – all Spanish all the time! It is expected that students review vocabulary daily outside of class so we can optimize class time to incorporate vocabulary into communication. Spanish 321 engages students in a thorough study of the structure of the Spanish language. Practical application is achieved through conversation, composition, and the study and discussion of current events. Spanish 321 seeks to enhance and develop students’ knowledge of advanced grammatical and lexical topics as well as their writing, reading, listening, speaking and cultural skills through formal presentations and practice conducted entirely in the target language.

American Sign Language (ASL) I - 3582A
This course is the first in a series of four courses. It is designed for students with no or minimal sign language experience. The course will help students develop the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). The student will be introduced to the visual language used by the Deaf Community in North America. The student will be exposed to an introduction to receptive and expressive ASL vocabulary, grammatical structures, finger spelling, numbers, conversational behavior and non-manual signals.
American Sign Language (ASL) II - 3582B
This course is the second in a series of four. The student will develop the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). This course is for students who have successfully completed ASL 1. The students will focus on the cultural behaviors and practices distinct to those that approach the world from a visual perspective. Students will further explore receptive and expressive ASL vocabulary, grammatical structures, finger spelling, numbers, conversational behaviors and non-manual signals.

American Sign Language (ASL) III - 3583
This course is the third in a series of four courses designed to enhance the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). This course is for students who have successfully completed ASL 2. The course focuses on the cultural behaviors and practices distinct to those that approach the world from a visual perspective. The course begins to implement the skills acquired in ASL 1 and 2. It will cover more complex grammatical topics, including temporal aspects, sequencing, conditionals, an introduction to conversational regulators, complex dialogue, storytelling and multiple meaning English terms with ASL equivalents.
American Sign Language (ASL) IV - 3584
This course is the last in a series of four courses designed to advance the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). This course is for students who have successfully completed ASL 3. The course focuses on the cultural behaviors and practices distinct to those that approach the world from a visual perspective. This course will integrate the skills acquired in ASL 1, 2 and 3. It will expand the use of conversational regulators and include an introduction to English idioms with ASL equivalents. These additional skills will enable students to convey information and ideas about linguistic, cultural and social issues in dialogues and narratives.

Prerequisite: Ability to speak and comprehend Spanish. This course will be conducted in Spanish.
Spanish Language Arts is a course designed for students who have a heritage background in Spanish. Students will explore the relationship between language, culture and identity. The course will include a review of vocabulary and grammar structures. Students will engage in honing their listening and speaking abilities, with a heightened emphasis on enhancing their proficiency in reading and writing in Spanish. This course will be conducted in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Successfully passed Spanish Language Arts I and/or teacher recommendation
Students in Spanish Language Arts 2 will engage in a multicultural community of Spanish speakers in their home language. Students will explore their intercultural identities and communication and their roles in a multilingual society. Students will enhance their proficiency in reading and writing in Spanish and analyze authentic texts, multimedia, and art to enhance their biliteracy.
