Intro to Business introduces students to various business topics and other high school business course offerings, such as Accounting, Business Law, Entrepreneurship, Personal Finance, and Sales & Marketing. Students will examine business operations locally and internationally, develop consumer skills, discuss social responsibility, discover the forms of business ownership, explore entrepreneurship and small business management, and recognize how business impacts their daily lives. Students will also learn technology skills such as Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Dual Credit (TC) earned for letter grade of B or better.
DUAL CREDIT*
Accounting, known as the language of business, provides students with a financial background to help them succeed in any area of business. Students will learn the fundamental steps of maintaining financial records for service businesses organized as proprietorships and merchandising businesses organized as corporations. Students will learn to analyze and journalize business transactions, prepare financial statements, and complete all components of the accounting cycle. In addition, students will utilize Excel throughout the course. The final project consists of a simulation in which students maintain the accounting records for Authentic Threads, a merchandising business, for one month. Finally, students may have the opportunity to participate in Explore Accounting Day at UW-Whitewater or some other accounting-related field trip. This course is strongly recommended for students planning on a career in business.

Students will build upon the basic accounting skills developed in the first-year course. Advanced Accounting will focus on departmentalized accounting, inventory planning, accounting for uncollectible accounts, accounting for plant assets, accounting for notes payable/receivable, prepaid expenses, unearned revenue, paying dividends, acquiring additional capital for a corporation, and financial reporting for a corporation. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of accounting procedures and techniques that are used in solving business problems and making financial decisions while using Excel and automated accounting software. The final project consists of a simulation in which students maintain the accounting records for First Class Image Wear, Inc., a merchandising business, for one month. Finally, students may have the opportunity to participate in Explore Accounting Day at UW-Whitewater or some other accounting-related field trip. This course is strongly encouraged for students planning on a career in business.

Sales & Marketing enables students to learn techniques businesses use to meet and exceed consumer needs. Students explore economic benefits, domestic and global markets, and the sales process. Students also analyze and apply marketing research, product management, promotion, financial, entrepreneurial, and career planning strategies.
Students complete online simulations throughout the semester by owning and operating electronics, grocery, and sporting goods businesses. Students focus on market research, product, purchasing and inventory control, merchandising, and price when operating their businesses. The online simulations also allow students to focus on traditional media promotions; email promotions; staffing, selling, and customer service; security and risk management; and financing and business planning.
Students also complete another online simulation by creating social media campaigns for a retail bag supplier. Students focus on creating effective social media ads, spending budgets wisely, growing brand awareness, and increasing customer engagement and sales.

Business Law focuses on how civil, criminal, consumer, contract, corporate, employment, property, and sales law protect our legal rights and responsibilities. Students apply relevant legal principles to their roles as citizens, consumers, employees, and business leaders. Students analyze, evaluate, and resolve legal disputes through class discussions, case studies, reflections, and videos.

Are you interested in owning and operating a business? Do you want to work for yourself and “be the boss?” If you answered yes to any of these questions, Entrepreneurship is the course for you!
Entrepreneurship enables students to develop an understanding of business operations and the skills necessary to become entrepreneurs. Students explore career, marketing, management, financial, and legal requirements to own and operate a small business. Students create their own businesses by choosing a business idea that is developed into a business plan throughout the semester.
Students also complete online management simulations throughout the semester by taking over the role of General Manager at bicycle and jeans factories. Students focus on forms of business ownership, pricing and sales, operations management, business planning, and recruiting and hiring employees when managing their factories. The online simulations also allow students to focus on employee opinions, employee supervision, unions and collective bargaining, management accounting, and risk management and insurance.

Personal Finance focuses on using financial procedures to plan, organize, and allocate resources. Students explore and understand financial opportunities affecting their daily lives, such as using money management strategies, setting financial goals, selecting financial services, evaluating risk management, protecting credit, and planning for retirement.
Students complete online simulations throughout the semester by selecting career and educational opportunities, banking services, housing and transportation options, investments, and other important decisions. Students also pay bills; file taxes; and purchase groceries, household items and services, insurance plans, vehicles, and homes during the simulations.

This course helps students explore Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint features while creating various business documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. In Software Academy students will have the opportunity to earn the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification, which is globally recognized for demonstrating Microsoft Office skills and meeting the workplace demand for qualified employees. Dual Credit (TC) earned for letter grade of B or better.
