Culture - What is shared about the way people act, express themselves or are organized?
Government - How is authority obtained and laws developed and how does that affect the way people live together?
As we have determined, civilization is an advanced form of culture, which is generally indicated when certain characteristics are present. Remember GRAPES? As you read this lesson, think about what it must have been like to create and live in the world's very first cities. We recognize that cities today offer a wide variety of cultural options, from restaurants to entertainment, sports or the arts. Would you be surprised to learn that early Mesopotamia cities were places of opportunity and culture?

The city-state is a unique feature of ancient civilizations, and specifically, the city-states of Sumer are where all of civilization began. A city-state is a self-governing community and it's nearby farmlands.
We know the ziggurat was the center of the city-state. Take a tour of a ziggurat with this video to learn how different social classes were allowed to use it.
Who lived in the ziggurat?
Was everyone allowed to enter?
Would it have been difficult to build such a large structure?
Knowing that priests took care of the gods in the city-state, do you think they would have power over the people?
History begins in Sumer.
Cuneiform is the origin of written history. Sumerians began to record business transactions, and then so much more!
