My Cocoon

By Naomi Thallman

I am cocooned in a blanket of warmth.

I am insulated from the cold, harsh environment surrounding me on all sides.

I dream a multitude of parallel worlds to which I may awake

I know I must emerge, and resist the urge to stay in the safety of my sleep

Suddenly I hear a voice call out, luring me away from my slumber

I awaken and slowly break free of my cocoon, peeling away my blanket of warmth

Then I swing my legs over the side of my bed and turn off my alarm

Another day has arrived

And I must rise to greet it
