In Latter Days

By Evelyn Blanchette

When the party is over, and when all our friends have left,

Where will you be standing? Mayhaps there among the mess?

When the lights have switched off, and the curtains are all drawn,

When there’s no more director, and the actors are long gone,

When the story is not written so we cannot turn the page,

Will you be waiting there, on the dark and emptied stage?

When the merry music’s given way to this dark and tired silence,

When our life’s been emptied out of the glamour and the glitz,

When the sun no longer shines, such that we cannot see the morning,

When the days are long and grey, and the nights are short and boring,

When the parties and the limelight are not left to stick around for,

When there are glory days, golden days, and salad days no more,

Where will you be standing? Where will your allegiance lie?

Now that the party’s over, how will you choose to spend your night?
