As an academic leader, Weber High is committed to providing students with opportunities to achieve academic excellence. To this end, we have been working to expand and strengthen our Advanced Placement offerings, and we are excited to announce a program starting with the class of 2024: AP Capstone.
AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program that provides students with an opportunity to engage in rigorous scholarly practice of the core academic skills necessary for successful college completion. Students can earn an AP Capstone Diploma by earning a score of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research and by earning a score of 3 or higher in four other AP Courses in grades 9-12.

AP Seminar—Sophomore or Junior Year
AP Seminar, the first course in the AP Capstone experience, is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Students learn to investigate a problem or issue, analyze arguments, compare different perspectives, synthesize information from multiple sources, and work alone and in a group to communicate their ideas.
AP Research—Senior Year
AP Research, the second course in the AP Capstone experience, allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense.
