NRMN Common Measures Working Groups

NRMN PIs had the opportunity to finalize the common measures for the NRMN community. This included participating in working groups (optional, but strongly encouraged) as well as responding to surveys (required) from the NRMN CC during the months of August and September. The timeline for phase 1 of the project to accomplish this is listed below:

• August 1: NRMN PIs contact CoordinationCenter@NRMNet.net to join a working group and/or nominate individuals from their team.
• August 2: NRMN CC contacts working group members to schedule initial meeting, clarify expectations, and offer support.
• August 7: NRMN CC launches survey #1 (demographics) to finalize initial batch of common measures.
• August 10: NRMN PIs contact CoordinationCenter@NRMNet.net to share suggestions or concerns about the proposed demographic measures. NRMN CC will assume your agreement if you don’t contact us before the deadline.
• August 14: Responses for survey #1 (demographics) due (1 response/site).
• August 21: Working groups propose common measures to CoordinationCenter@NRMNet.net.
• August 22: NRMN CC launches survey #2 to finalize last batch of common measures.
• September 4: Responses for survey #2 due (1 response/site).
• September 17: NRMN CC updates NRMN Measurement Library with finalized common measures.
• September 24: NRMN PIs complete Measurement Library survey to share feedback/questions.

Mentoring B (Quantity, frequency, engagement) - REtired

Measures: This working group discussed the following Hallmark measures: STU-10 and FAC-5.

Members included: Nora Dominguez and Akshay Sood.

Outcome: Agreed upon measures have been posted on the NRMN Measurement Library derived from several sources: 1 for quantity, 4 for frequency and 4 for engagement.

Networks - Retired

Measures: This working group discussed the following Hallmark measures: STU-15.

Members included: Carrie Cameron, Nora Dominguez, Angela Gutierrez, Paul Hernandez, Melissa McDaniels, and Akshay Sood.

Outcome: Working group met and proposed the following measures. Agreed upon measures have been posted on the NRMN Measurement Library.

• Kram & Higgins (2004) - Roster Question (to identify actors in a network)
• Dreher & Ash (1990) - Psychosocial Support
• Dreher & Ashe (1990) - Career / Instrumental Support
• Higgins (2004) - Alter-Alter Ties

Scientific Community Values - Retired

Measures: This working group discussed the following additional measures: Scientific community values.

Members included: Mica Estrada, Carrie Cameron and Jeffrey Engler.

Outcome: Working group has decided to use Estrada et al., 2011. This has been posted on the NRMN Measurement Library.

Professional Self-Identity - Retired

Measures: This working group discussed the following additional measures: Professional self-identity.

Members included: Vineet Arora, Susan Girdler, and Lourdes Guerrero.

Outcome: Working group has proposed the Professional Identity Scale revised for researchers (adapted it from the scale describes in Appendix I of Adams et al., 2006). This has been posted on the NRMN Measurement Library.
