For St Mary's: Patients with pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes should be scheduled to see a Nutritionist/Registered Dietician within 7-10 days of diagnosis and prior to consultation with Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) if needed.
This gives the patient a chance to learn how to use a glucometer and begin to work on dietary changes in preparation for MFM consultation. Then, at the consultation approximately 1 week later, blood sugars can be reviewed and the determination can be made whether the patient should begin medication.
MFM nurses are available for nutrition education on occasion and filled this gap while Endocrinology/Diabetes/Nutrition was under-staffed, but are unable to bill for these nutrition counseling services and the MFM Clinic does not have a Nutritionist/Registered Dietician on site.
For Meriter: Patients should be referred to April Eddy through Perinatology referral ***Need further clarification about process***
