Failed Hearing Screen

CMV testing

The UW Neonatology and Newborn Hospitalist Division has started targeted testing of newborns for congenital CMV. This testing is done for newborns who fail their hearing screen (unilateral or bilateral) prior to discharge from their birth hospitalization and for newborns with clinical suspicion of congenital CMV infection. At this time, testing must be ordered by the newborn provider. We are hoping to ultimately incorporate this process into our automatic nurse driven protocols.

Please be aware that testing for congenital CMV is time sensitive and the diagnosis must be made in the first 21 days of life. In order to ensure that all newborns with congenital CMV are appropriately evaluated and treated, referral to UW Pediatric Infectious Disease (ID) is recommended as soon as possible after positive CMV PCR result. UW Pediatric ID will coordinate additional consults and evaluation of newborn and recommends an ophthamology consult, audiology for diagnostic ABR and a cranial ultrasound in first 21 days of life and a scheduled appointment in the Pediatric ID clinic in the first 28 days of life.

Please see the attached documents for further information about targeted CMV screening. Included are:
