Assessment Overview

Biology Paper 1 - covering topics 1-4

Chemistry Paper 1 - covering topics 1-5

Physics Paper 1 - covering topics 1-4

Biology Paper 2 - covering topics 5-8

Chemistry Paper 2 - covering topics 6-10

Physics Paper 2 - covering topics 5-8

These 3 science disciplines are individual GCSEs in their own right, however you cannot choose to just take one of them, you have to take either all three of them (a total of 3 GCSEs) so we call this science package, the Separate Sciences.

These qualifications are linear so all examinations are sat after all the topics have been studied at the end of Year 11. Each examination paper is written and takes 1 hour 45 minutes to complete. There is no coursework element to any of these courses. Each examination paper is worth 100 marks and contains a mix of multiple choice, calculation, short answer, structured answer and open response questions.

Each paper has an equal weighting of 50%

Foundation tier students will be awarded Grades 1 to 5

Higher tier students will be awarded Grades 4 to 9

Key Information & Topics

You will require a scientific calculator, black pens, pencils, an eraser, a ruler, You will be allowed to use this calculator in every exam so make it your best friend. There are also 23 required practical investigations that you have to undertake so almost every topic that you will study has one required practical element.

Career & Further Study Information

If you enjoy science and are good at it, you might have already thought about taking some form of science qualification at Post 16. If you are a purist and are looking at taking either IB Biology, IB Chemistry or IB Physics, you should consider taking any Separate Sciences as while many of the subject topics are the same as in the Combined Science course, you will study them in greater depth and so will be much better prepared for your 6th form endeavours. This is why Separate Sciences rates as an option for your KS4 study as more time is needed to go through the extra course material and practical investigation you will need to study. Plus there is the possibility of a week long trip to NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston Texas to see how their astronauts are spacing up for the trip to Mars. This option is only available to 60 students and places on it are usually offered by invitation only. So if you are thinking of taking sciences at Post 16 please discuss this with your teacher or Mr Tilley to see if you are eligible.
