Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
It’s been another busy - if slightly shorter - week, and excitement is building as we look ahead to our Year 6 residential next week!
In Maths, we have been revising how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, including mixed numbers. We've also dedicated time to the Willington Extended Project - also known as the Summer Fair Project - which has allowed us to apply our mathematical thinking in real-life contexts. In Humanities, we’ve been learning about some of the key cities in Russia and exploring the geography of this vast country. We've looked at its diverse climates and physical features, developing our understanding of how geography can shape culture and daily life.
In Science, we continued working on our project about the five kingdoms of life. It's becoming very exciting, as we’re looking forward to seeing what others have chosen to represent each kingdom. As part of this project, we are also developing our IT skills by formatting tables in Google Docs. In Drama this week, we focused on scene practice for the Leavers' Production. Ms Wilkinson said that our impressive characterisation is really bringing out the humour and we all agree that the show is steadily coming together!
In English, we have been focusing on understanding the main characters in Romeo and Juliet - Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio and Tylbalt - learning more about their character traits and motivations through love/hate letter writing and hot seating. On Thursday in English, to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, we had the opportunity to watch a video recording of an interview between Ms Henson and her late parents, filmed five years ago during lockdown. In it, they shared their personal experiences of the Second World War. It was absolutely fascinating, and it sparked a rich class discussion about what life was like during that time. Their stories brought the reality of the war vividly into our classroom. We’d like to thank Ms Henson for generously sharing such a powerful and important historical document with us.
We will not be able to write a Newsletter next week as we will be travelling home from our residential adventure, but we can't wait to tell you all about our adventures when we get home!
