Nursery
This week in Nursery, we continued exploring our Opposites topic with lots of exciting hands-on learning.
Using our new measuring tape, we measured each other's height and discovered that measuring tapes can be used to measure height, width and depth. Much to the children’s delight, we also found out that Mrs Mahmoud is the shortest of the teachers!
We explored a range of opposites including long/short, dark/light and heavy/light. The children enjoyed a variety of engaging activities using different media and materials. They practised their scissor control and cutting skills to create an extra-long worm that winds all the way around the Nursery classroom.
We ventured into a dark, gloomy cave and used torches to find our way out to the bright, sunny playground. There, we crossed a ‘river’, carefully balancing as we looked at our dark shadows, doing our best to escape the snapping crocodile below!
The children also took part in an exciting science experiment using balloons filled with different materials such as air, water and sand. They threw the balloons in the air, watched how they fell, and used counting as a way to measure how long each one took to land.
On the interactive board, we learnt about hot air balloons and their fascinating mechanisms. The children were captivated by the fun facts about air and molecules!
Our story of the week was The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson, illustrated by Paul Howard. The children really enjoyed the story, and we had a lovely discussion about light and dark and, who might be afraid of the dark.
Our letter of the week was ‘d’ for dark. The children listened to the Jolly Phonics song and each had a turn thinking of an object beginning with that letter.
