Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
What a buzzy week we’ve had in Reception! Our learning was inspired by 'The Very Greedy Bee' by Steve Smallman, which led to some brilliant discussions about sharing and helping others. The children loved creating their own bees using egg cartons, carefully painting and decorating them. We also discovered that bees build their honeycombs using hexagonal cells—what clever creatures! The children worked together to piece together their own honeycomb designs before painting them in golden shades, ready for their bees to get to work making honey.
We’ve also been learning fascinating bee facts—did you know there are around 25,000 different species of bees in the world? The children were amazed! We even got to examine real cocoons that Mason bees had hatched out of, sparking lots of curiosity and thoughtful questions.
A real highlight of the week was our exciting trip to The Wetlands Centre. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and had a wonderful time exploring the natural surroundings. We learned all about the different birds and ducks that live there, and we were even treated to the sight of some playful otters basking in the sun!
Back in the classroom, we introduced subtraction using small world objects, making learning both fun and hands-on. Well done, Reception!
