Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
We had a fantastic week celebrating World Book Day! It was so much fun seeing everyone’s outfits and listening to different teachers read a variety of books. A huge thanks to Mrs. Battey for organising such a wonderful event!
In History, we’ve been mapping the countries once part of the British Empire and exploring what they exported to Britain. We then delved into the Ancient Kingdom of Benin, learning about its rich history before examining the impact of the British Empire on the region. In Geography, Mrs. Draper challenged us to locate key West African countries and investigate Nigeria's features in pairs. We presented our findings on its culture, population, economy, climate, and geography to the class. With Madam Veloso, we’ve been diving into the Hispanic world, learning about Spain and its culture. We have been practicing Spanish greetings and how to introduce ourselves including saying our name and asking others how they are. We’ve also worked on numbers up to 31, helping us to prepare for talking about our age. It’s been a fantastic start to our Spanish learning—¡muy bien! 🎉🇪🇸
In Maths, we extended our knowledge of calculating the area of rectangles to include right-angled triangles. We also learned how to find the area of parallelograms and any triangle without a right angle, allowing us to calculate the area of compound shapes made from rectangles and triangles. This Thursday and next, Ms Wilkinson said we will use our Drama sessions to rehearse for our Engineering assembly on Friday, 14th March. Apparently we have already demonstrated confident delivery and are almost ready to present to the whole school! In Latin, we translated a passage about a slave girl helping the mother at Vindolanda. We were intrigued to learn that Romans used small spoons to clean their ears and had invented lip gloss!
Finally, in English, we have enjoyed writing our own poems this week, looking at sing-song poems using repetition of both words and rhythm. We started by writing individual poems, about our families and then on World Book Day we enjoyed an outdoors lessons writing a class poem in the sing song style. Here they are:
Our Childhood by 5Alpha
We are 5Alpha,
we are brave, kind and proud.
We love to have fun, get things done
in the years of our childhood.
Some adore football,
others prefer Warhammer.
But all love Spud, the positive potato
in the years of our childhood.
We are a rainbow
of many different cultures;
speak many languages; and relish varied foods
in the years of our childhood.
We are all unique,
but come together as a whole.
We all have a place
in the years of our childhood.
The Dream Team by 5A
High five for 5A,
we are very kind and helpful,
silly and smart
we are the dream team.
There’s football and rugby,
arts and crafts;
there’s gaming and theatre
we are the dream team.
In our learning space:
Maths, English and Philosophy.
Not forgetting play times
we are the dream team.
Diversity and our pillars
are our superpowers,
we will leave a lasting mark
we are the dream team.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 Team
