Big news this week - both Year 5 & 6 have all been flexing our minds by taking part in the Primary Maths Challenge!
Mr Wildman said that results and certificates will follow in the coming weeks. We have also been working on converting between metric units of measurement. We hope to spend some time doing the same with the Imperial system next week. In English this week we started using figurative language and the senses to build up wonderful descriptions of a storm, from below the water. We have also learned about adverbial phrases and have been identifying them in the second part of Beowulf.
In Latin, we have been spotting some English derivations from the Latin vocabulary, and even attempted to translate a short Latin version of the story of the Trojan Horse. Ms Henson said we did this last bit with great success! In History, we have been focusing on where the Vikings came from, how they traveled and their key beliefs. We are working on creating a knowledge organiser to summarise our understanding of the Vikings so far, as this is a really useful study skill. In Geography, we learnt about how glaciers are formed, and how glaciers created the fjords in Norway.
In Drama this week, we continued our exploration of the Anglo-Saxons, with a focus on the burial site uncovered at Sutton Hoo. We considered the emotions involved in this significant archaeological discovery and created three tableaux, or frozen pictures, demonstrating this. We then mimed handling different artefacts that were found and worked in pairs to improvise conversations between the archaeologist Basil Brown and Mrs. Pretty, who owned the Sutton Hoo estate.
Finally, in Science this week, we investigated how a lever, as a simple mechanism, helps us move or lift heavy objects. We used a lever, a fulcrum, a 1kg load, and some 100g weights. We found that the further we placed the weights from the fulcrum along the lever, the fewer weights were needed. This demonstrated that levers enable us to lift heavy objects by applying a smaller force.
Have a lovely weekend!
