Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
It has been another busy week for us in Year 6!
In Humanities, we have been learning about air pressure and the different types of rainfall. We were also introduced to a live weather-tracking app and were fascinated to spot the early stages of a hurricane developing in the Atlantic - a brilliant way to see our learning come alive. In History, we have been comparing key features of a range of ancient civilisations, such as religions, building structures, and written languages. This has helped us reflect on the similarities and differences between cultures and deepen our understanding of why societies from very different parts of the world often developed such similar features.
In English, we have enjoyed reading more of Holes and getting to know the back stories of the character. We have also been reviewing reading comprehension techniques and refreshing the subjunctive form. In Latin, we focused on the six verb endings of the present tense, along with the irregular verb ‘to be’. We then read about archeological finds at Vindolanda, where the family in our text book were based for five years, and some of us took on the challenge to sketch an ornamental horse’s headdress, which was pretty tricky! In French, we have been learning vocabulary for different types of houses and have begun to talk about rooms in a house. We then began to build sentences to describe where we live and what our homes are like. In Drama, we continued rehearsing our radio plays in groups, incorporating sound effects.
In Maths, we have revised solving problems involving measures, including speed. In Science this week we learnt more about how to stay safe with a Bunsen burner so that we are ready for our practical lessons. We also reminded ourselves what a fair test is and compared four different glues to see which was strongest, making sure the control variables stayed the same so the results were reliable. In Computing, 6A carried on with the Lego Spike Prime kits and tried our first coding task to make the robot move; 6Alpha continued with spreadsheets, learning how to build a simple financial model and practising formulas, linking cells, and setting up calculations. In PSHCEE, we focused on online safety. We learnt how search engines work, briefly explored the pros and cons of AI, and considered ways to look after our wellbeing while using the internet.
Have a wonderful weekend!
