Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
It has been another lively week for us here in Year 5!
In History, we have been exploring how to design an effective knowledge organiser. We practised a range of writing techniques before putting our research, comprehension, summarising, and presentation skills to the test by creating our own organisers on Anglo-Saxon life. In Geography, we have been investigating different forms of sustainable energy, weighing up the positives and negatives of each source. We applied our understanding by adding an extra page to our sustainability pop-up books.
In English, we have used short sentences and ‘show don’t tell’ to build tension when describing finding a body, from a first person perspective. We have also learned about the passive voice and why it is used and we are looking forward to using it to create suspense in our writing. In Latin, we reviewed the six myths covered in the first half of the Minimus text book, then chose our favourite to present either as a comic strip or presentation. In French, we have been learning new vocabulary for school objects, practising when to use 'un' and 'une' to show the difference between masculine and feminine nouns. We then enjoyed some speaking and listening activities, to describe what we have in our school bags. In Drama, we continued with our mime performances from the previous lesson, then began thinking about voice and different vocal techniques. We ended the lesson with a very competitive tongue twister race!
In Maths, we have been learning about Roman Numerals, multiples, factors and prime numbers. In Science, we carried on learning what it means to work scientifically. We looked at measuring instruments and how to record our results clearly in tables and charts. At the end of the week we started our first big topic of the year: Forces. In Computing, we started with our regular touch-typing practice and then finished our work on Google Docs, learning how to format images. In PSHCEE, we explored the theme of sameness and difference; we discussed how everyone is equal, regardless of their similarities and differences, and reflected on the importance of showing respect to others.
Have a lovely weekend.
