Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
We’ve had another fantastic week in Year 5, filled with sunshine, learning, and adventure! Some of this week's standout moments included a sunny afternoon of cricket, our whole school photograph, and a brilliant trip to IMO with Mr Thisanayagam.
In Maths this week, we tackled assessments and explored how to read and interpret data from pie charts. We’ve also made a great start on constructing our own pie charts using compasses and protractors. This topic has offered the perfect chance to revisit key skills like finding fractions and percentages of amounts. We've also reviewed how to measure angles - especially in our very own "squirkles." (If you're wondering, a "squirkle" is what we often end up drawing the first time we use a compass…but with practice, these quirky shapes transform into perfect circles!)
In Humanities, we proudly presented our USA Road trip projects - and what a journey it’s been! Our classmates wowed us with imaginative and well-researched itineraries for their fictional families. From seal spotting to rock climbing, hovercraft rides in the Everglades to classic American diner meals, and of course, a stop at the Statue of Liberty - it’s safe to say we’ve travelled the length and breadth of North America (at least in our minds!). Next stop: Japan! We’re looking forward to beginning our short course on this fascinating country next week.
In English this week we have continued reading Kensuke's Kingdom with a focus on understanding the meaning of new vocabulary and using the context to help us to decipher and define new words. We have also been looking at the perfect ingredients for both creative and persuasive writing. In Latin. we have started the final chapter of our Minimus text book. We translated a story, before completing a review of all the grammar we have covered. Phew, we’ve learnt a lot of Latin grammar!
In Science, we researched the gestation periods of different mammal species, along with the average number of offsprings per pregnancy and life expectancy. We used bar graphs to analyse and compare the data, helping us to draw conclusions. We also studied human reproduction and learnt how life begins from a single cell, which divides and develops into a human baby over a period of approximately nine months.
Finally, in Spanish, we have started an exciting new topic: En la cafetería (At the Café). We began by learning to recognise and spell ten common masculine nouns for popular food and drinks, using the correct indefinite article. Building on this, we have now learned ten more feminine nouns, also with the correct article, to describe even more delicious items typically found in a Spanish café. We have really enjoyed exploring all this yummy Spanish food - we are feeling hungry and ready for some churros! 😋🇪🇸🥞
Have a great weekend!
