Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
We can’t believe how quickly the first week back has flown by! It’s been a packed and exciting start, full of cricket matches, another brilliant Elevate 11+ session, and plenty of learning across the board.
In History, we began exploring the colonisation of North America, focusing on the founding of Jamestown, Virginia. To step into the shoes of those early pioneers, we thought carefully about what we’d pack for the journey and then designed our own colonial towns from scratch. In Geography, we added the final touches to our USA Road Trip projects, ready for presentations (and voting!) next week. Mr Brown raised the stakes by announcing that the winning team will present their project in assembly—no pressure!
In Maths, we’ve been revisiting our understanding of Time. We’ve practised converting between different units, switching between 12-hour and 24-hour formats, and solving time-related word problems. In Latin, we produced comic strips based on the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, which inspired Shakespeare to write Romeo and Juliet. We then completed our presentations on Roman customs and beliefs about death and burial. We can’t believe that next week we will start the final chapter of the Minimus text book, which we began working on in Year 3!
During the half-term break, for our science homework we thought about how we have grown and changed since we were born. We looked at important milestones like crawling, walking, talking, riding a bike and learning to swim. This week in class, we learnt about the main stages of human development and what happens at each stage. We especially focused on adolescence and the important changes that happen to our bodies during this time as part of the human life cycle.
In English, as well as being introduced to the subjunctive mood this week, we have been learning all about the atomic bombs that ended World War Two, culminating in a debate on the motion: Did the USA make the right decision to drop an atomic bomb on Japan?
