Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
Welcome to our Week 2 newsletter!
We have been really excited to get stuck into our new Humanities topic, the Middle East. This week we have been revising our climate graph creating skills and learning about the climate and different biomes of the Middle East. In History, we have been researching the House of Wisdom, the world largest library at the time, and creating a prospectus. We found it really interesting to learn that the Caliph paid scholars very well and they even had health benefits, such a massages, as part of their job package!
In English this week we have looked at two very different styles of writing, inspired by Skellig - Estate Agent selling techniques and using figurative language and the senses to describe a setting. From positive spin to powerful imagery, our writing has been very creative. In Latin, we continued our focus on gender and adjectival agreement. We sorted nouns according to whether they were masculine, feminine or neuter, then completed phrases by selecting the correct adjective to agree with the gender of the noun. We also read the Roman Report about Emperor Trajan and we’re looking forward to researching his rule and achievements next lesson.
This week in Drama, we workshopped some scenes from the Leavers' Production ahead of finalising the cast. Miss Wilkinson said that there was already some promising characterisation in the performances, and we are really looking forward to getting started on rehearsals. In Maths, we have been revising the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages and practising how to convert between each.
Finally, in French, we’ve started a new topic, En ville (In town). We’ve been identifying places in a town and practising how to ask questions about them using Est-ce qu’il y a...? We’ve also been describing which places can be found in a town using Il y a and Il n’y a pas. Our listening and speaking activities have been particularly helpful in reinforcing this learning.
Have a great weekend!
