Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
This week in Reception, our young explorers continued their journey through Space, focusing on the Sun, Mercury, and Venus. The children were fascinated to learn about the blazing Sun at the heart of our solar system and how Mercury and Venus are the closest planets to it. We discussed how these planets differ from Earth, sparking curiosity and lots of great questions.
One of the highlights of the week was our moon crater experiment, delivered by Mrs Hussain. Using a tray filled with flour, sprinkled with hot chocolate, and small rocks, we recreated how craters form on the Moon’s surface. The hands-on activity helped the children visualise the impact of meteorites and asteroids in a fun and memorable way.
In phonics, we introduced the digraphs 'ow' and 'ar.' To reinforce the 'ow' sound, we read the beloved story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.
In maths, we worked on adding numbers using a number line, building confidence with this essential skill. We also revisited 2D shapes and explored 3D shapes, introducing cubes, cuboids, pyramids, spheres, cones and cylinders. The children explored these shapes and created lots of interesting models.
It’s been an exciting and productive week of learning, setting the stage for more space adventures next week!
