FAFSA

While filing the FAFSA is not a scholarship, it is an essential part of seeking scholarships and financial aid for college. Many scholarship programs use FAFSA calculations to determine financial need. Additionally, colleges and universities award federal financial aid dollars based on a first-come, first-served basis, so you want to be sure you are considered for aid you may be eligible to receive. The FAFSA can be completed any time after October 1 and most colleges/universities require FAFSA completion by March 1.

Goodnight Scholars

The Goodnight Scholars Program, funded by a gift from Dr. Jim and Ann Goodnight, began in 2008 with 25 scholars. Since that time, it has grown into a comprehensive student development program designed to develop scholars into leaders within the STEM and/or Education fields. The scholarship is targeted at low- and middle-income families from North Carolina and is limited to students studying in the STEM disciplines or affiliated education majors. Successful candidates typically: rank in the top 2% of his/her graduating class; score above 1450 on the new SAT (CR+M) (equivalent to a 1400 on the old SAT) and/or score above a 32 on the ACT; and have at least a 3.9 (unweighted) GPA and/or 4.8 (weighted) GPA. The value of the scholarship is $19,500 and is renewable for up to four years. In addition to the scholarship, Goodnight Scholars have access to an assortment of developmental programming focused on their professional and personal growth. Students are invited to apply by NC State or may self-nominate. To be considered, students must complete their application for NC State by November 1.

Nominated student applications are due by November 15.

Merit Scholarships to Wake Forest University

Each year Wake Forest awards merit-based scholarships to less than 3% of its first-year applicants; the recipients will benefit greatly from a Wake Forest education even as they contribute significantly to the intellectual and civic life of the campus. These scholarships, among the highest honors given to Wake Forest students, are renewable through four years, subject to satisfactory academic, extracurricular, and civic performance. Most scholarships (including the Reynolds, Carswell, Stamps, and Gordon scholarships) do not require a separate merit-based scholarship application. Instead, students need only submit a complete application for undergraduate admissions by November 15.

Interested students must be prepared to present evidence of outstanding talent and are asked by the Presidential Scholarship Committee for documentation of that talent (such as art portfolios, debate records, taped performances, etc.) and recommendations. Details are here. Deadline is November 15.
