Community Foundation of Western North Carolina

CFWNC serves students in the western region of North Carolina, including Wilkes County. Many scholarships are listed, with deadlines falling between January and July. To view the deadlines, please go to this page. Scholarship amounts and requirements vary, so students will need to conduct their own search of this site.


FAFSA

While filing the FAFSA is not a scholarship, it is an essential part of seeking scholarships and financial aid for college. Many scholarship programs use FAFSA calculations to determine financial need. Additionally, colleges and universities award federal financial aid dollars based on a first-come, first-served basis, so you want to be sure you are considered for aid you may be eligible to receive. 


Frontier Natural Gas Scholarship

A one-time $500 scholarship for a student majoring in science, business, or engineering. The best essay on the topic will be selected as the winner. The essay question this year is "With the push for more clean energy, where does natural gas fit in the utility industry 20 years from now? Deadline for you to return your completed application and essay to your school counselor is May 1, 2024.


Lois Ann Triplett Memorial Scholarship

$500 scholarship provided to a graduate of West Wilkes High School or Wilkes Central High School, the two schools connected to the Triplett family. Lois Ann Triplett was a Wilkes County Schools employee for 29 years. She was a faithful servant to the community and her family. Lois Ann tragically and swiftly passed away in the fall of 2023 after only 9 days following a devastating cancer diagnosis. Lois Ann valued education for herself, for her children and for her grandchildren.  Deadline is May 15, 2024.


Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the nation's oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military families. Last year they awarded over $10.8 million to more than 2,700 students. 10% of those scholarships were CTE Scholarships for students pursuing non-degree certificate CTE programs. They provide scholarships to eligible children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen, Chaplains, and Religious Program Specialists. Their CTE Scholarships are for students pursuing a non-degree certificate program at any accredited school--whether that be a trade school, career training school, or community college. Be sure to check out this CTE scholarship brochure, their eligiblity criteria, and FAQs to get all of the details. The CTE scholarship applications are reviewed on a monthly basis, so it's never too late to apply. 


NAEHCY (National Association for the Education of Homeless Children & Youth) Scholarship

Three $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to students (up to age 23 by 9/1/23) who have experienced homelessness while enrolled in school and are pursuing post-secondary education or trade school. According to the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act, a person is considered homeless who “lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence.” This includes people living in shelters, cars, motels/hotels, campgrounds, or places not meant for human habitation. The definition includes children and youth who are living with friends or relatives temporarily (doubled-up or sharing the housing of others) because they lack permanent housing. NC Assist Scholarship Contest

CFNC sponsored monthly $1000 scholarship drawing. Simply fill out the form and your name is entered into the drawing. A new winner is selected every month, but you have to re-apply every month for consideration.


NC Longleaf Commitment Grant

The Longleaf Commitment is a grant program for 2021 North Carolina high school graduates who will attend one of our state’s “Great 58” community colleges starting in the Fall 2021 semester. High school graduates may be eligible to receive this grant – not a loan – to cover tuition and fees toward a degree or to attain transfer credit. Full-time eligible students are guaranteed to receive $700 to $2,800 per academic year, for a total of two years. Less than full-time students may receive a partial award. The Longleaf Commitment Grant ends at the conclusion of the 2023 spring semester. See flyer for full eligibility criteria. Apply at CFNC. 


North State Law Enforcement Officers Association Scholarship

One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to the top applicant and two $500 scholarships will be offered to two additional top applicants. Successful applicants will be under 24 years of age and be a NC resident, have a greater than 3.0 gpa, have no criminal convictions or pending criminal matters, and must be majoring in criminal justice or a related field. High school or college transcript, four letters of reference, and SAT/ACT scores must be submitted with application. Deadline is May 15.


North Wilkesboro Rotary Club Foundation Scholarships 

Two scholarships are available at each of the traditional county high schools and one scholarship is available to students attending Wilkes Early College High School. The Hugh Martin Scholarship is for students planning to attend a four-year college or university and four $1000 scholarships will be awarded. The Gene Foster Scholarship is for students planning to attend Wilkes Community College (or another community college) and four $1000 scholarships will be awarded. One Ricky Pardue Scholarship of $1000 will be awarded to a senior at Wilkes Early College High School who plans to attend a four-year college or university in the fall. Deadline for you to return your application to your school counselor is May 6, 2024.


NC Veteran's Affairs Scholarships

If you are the child of a disabled, deceased, combat, or POW/MIA war veteran, and your parent/guardian is currently a resident of NC, or was a NC resident at the time of their entry into military service, you may be eligible for a scholarship from the State of North Carolina to attend one of the state universities, community colleges, or technical schools. Quincy V. Lineberger Foundation Scholarship

The Quincy V. Lineberger Memorial Scholarship is established to honor the memory and contributions of Quincy V. Lineberger to East Wilkes High School and the surrounding community and to provide scholarships for graduating high school seniors from a Wilkes County high school. The scholarship will provide a $1,000 non-renewable award for one male scholar athlete and one female scholar athlete who will pursue full-time undergraduate degrees from accredited post-secondary institutions. Scholarships will be applied to the cost of undergraduate tuition, fees, room and board, and other college expenses. Deadline to return your completed application to your school counselor is May 1.


The Health Foundation (application available on March 11, 2024)

Scholarships up to $2000 designed to help Wilkes students pursue making their health care career dreams a reality. Scholarship is renewable on an annual basis when students remain in good academic standing (gpa of 3.0 or higher) within their declared major. Past awards have been made to students studying to become nurses, respiratory therapists, optometrists, radiology technologists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and more. United Way of Wilkes Scholarship 

United Way of Wilkes County will select one high school senior for a scholarship to a one-year diploma/certificate or two-year degree program at Wilkes Community College in the fall of 2023. Students who meet the following requirements are encouraged to apply for the scholarship: 1) Be a resident of Wilkes County; 2) Have benefited from a Untied Way program; and 3) Be enrolled in either a one-year diploma/certificate or two-year degree program at Wilkes Community College in the fall. Complete application and submit two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or employers. Deadline is May 10, 2023.

Wilkes Community College Education Promise Scholarship

WCC Education Promise is a two-year, last-dollar scholarship designed to ensure every qualifying student graduating from high school in Wilkes, Ashe, and Alleghany counties can get a college degree from Wilkes Community College tuition-free. This scholarship program makes sure every qualifying student is 100% covered for the roughly $2,571 annual cost for tuition and institutional fees.

William M. Sanders Scholarship for NC Junior Angus Association

High school seniors who are members of the NC Junior Angus Association are eligible for this scholarship if they have demonstrated participation, leadership, and service in the National Junior Angus Association. Deadline is May 1.


Younce, Vtipil & Baznik Scholarship

Younce, Vtipil & Baznik P.A are offering scholarship prizes totaling $1,500 to students in high schools across North Carolina. The firm understands the importance of attaining a college education to pursue a fulfilling career. The contest opens on January 15 and will be closing on May 1. To compete in the contest, students must submit an essay of 500 words. Deadline is May 1.
