Flipgrid Fun & Creative Ways to Demonstrate Learning

"Hey Alisa! What's that tool you used with students...where they created really fun videos? They loved it!"

That video response platform was Fligrid. Flipgrid is an excellent tool. Use it to amplify students voices ... students can give and receive powerful feedback. (The Flipgrid app is already installed on K - 2 iPads. 3rd - 5th grades students can easily navigate to the site.)

Flipgrid

Flipgrid is a video response platform that allows educators to ask a question and students then respond in a video. Students can also respond and interact with each other. Flipgrid's new interactive tools - such as the whiteboard, live drawing, camera filters, and more - make Flipgrid even better that ever. Yes, students can still decorate frames with “stickies” and other fun items. Go ahead and use Flipgrid in your class today!

Top tip: When creating your Flipgrid 'Grid', for grid type select 'School Email'. For the school email type: @students.wcpss.net. Once your grid is created, you can add new Topics for students to respond to throughout the school year.

Check out these Flipgrid video topics. Every Topic you add ignites engagement in classrooms.

What are some more creative ways students can demonstrate what they know?

Fake Social Media Posts

Creating fake social media posts requires a great deal of higher level thinking. Students have to take information and transform it into something new. This forces students to be very creative. For example, a fake Facebook page is an excellent way to see if students understand the concept behind a book, character, historical figure or even a science concept.

FakeBook

Use Fakebook to create a fake profile for a fictional or historical character.

Twister

Use Twister to create fictional "status updates" that can then be printed off for display purposes.

iFake Text Message

Use iFake Text Message to create fake text conversations between people students are studying, such as literary characters or historical figures. This way, they are able to show their content mastery, such as Science or Math topics.

How do I use Voice Dictation on the iPad?

This is the number one feature that I use with K and 1st grade writers.

  1. Display the on-screen keyboard, then tap the microphone. (This works with MOST of the apps.)
  2. Start talking. The device listens to your voice and turns it into text as you talk. Use keywords to insert punctuation or paragraph breaks as needed.
  3. Tap Done to stop dictating.
  4. Make adjustments to the text as necessary with the keyboard.
