"We are Bugg Magnet Elementary, the Center for Design and Computer Sciences. How are we compiling, showcasing, and sharing student work? In accordance with the WCPSS district initiative, we too will be assisting students in creating digital portfolios. "

Wake County Public Schools Digital Portfolio Initiative

Digital portfolios are called for in the Wake County Public School System's Vision 2020 Strategic Plan. The portfolios are a strategy found under the "Balanced Assessement System" goal.

Balanced Assessment System

To develop and implement a balanced assessment system that accurately reflects students’ knowledge of core curriculum standards as well as the ability to collaborate, be creative, communicate, and think critically.

What are digital portfolios?

The portfolios will be the place where students can store work examples ("artifacts") of their learning that are related to the four "Core Competencies" of graduates as identified by students, teachers, parents, civic groups and district leaders:

  • Collaboration
  • Creativity
  • Communication
  • Critical Thinking

Types of content in digital portfolios could be:

  • Showcase– uploading of final artifacts, best work, best achievement, outcome of a project.
  • Process– highlights the process of learning; Upload snapshots of moments in time, the stages of a project, first (second, third, etc.) drafts.
  • Hybrid– a combination of showcase and process portfolio.

Why are we having students create them?

We will be having students create digital portfolios to:

  • Encourage the development of a college and career readiness skill that students should have mastered by graduation.
  • Create a system for balanced assessment across all grade levels.
  • Help frame a conversation around project and problem-based learning.
  • Provide an authentic way to teach students how to productively use technology while learning.
