Monitoring Students, Internet Safety, and Online Resources

"Last year, many of you asked the following questions: How can we help keep students safe while using the internet and online resources? How can we monitor student device usage? How can we see what’s on a student’s screen? How can we easily share students’ screens with the class? While nothing can replace walking around the classroom and physically monitoring each student’s usage, the tools listed below can help."

Apple Classroom

All K – 2 teachers and Specialists please make sure you have downloaded Apple Classroom to your teacher iPad. First, update your iPad (and student iPads) to the latest IOS. More information about Apple Classroom and iPads can be found here.

Cast Chromebook screens to teacher laptop

While we do not have a tool like Apple Classroom for our 3-5 Chromebook users, we can combine Google Classroom and an Extension to receive a similar effect. Teachers will be able to monitor up to 4 student screens by following the instructions listed here. You must have students enrolled in Google Classroom and have installed the Google Cast for Education Extension to your Chrome browser for this to work.

Enrolling students in software programs that require username and passwords (e.g. Seesaw)

When enrolling students in approved software programs that require an username and password, please use students' WakeID as the username and Student ID # as the password. If given the option, please choose the ‘Google Login’.

For example, when creating class Seesaw accounts, please choose for students to 'Sign in with Google'. FYI: Coming soon, we will have Seesaw for Schools. For more details about Seesaw, click here.

Approved software & websites

The Student section of the Bugg website is a great place to locate student-friendly web resources. In addition, WCPSS has begun evaluating a range of software. On the WakeID Portal (RapidIdentity Dashboard), staff will see ‘Digital Resource Product Library’. Here you will find a list of software that has been reviewed by Tech Services. This is not a comprehensive list. Additional resources may also be used.

If you are unsure about whether software is appropriate for students, please ask. Also, read the website's Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy. As our students are under 13 years old, stringent rules apply.

YouTube Policy

Please read the WCPSS YouTube policy found here. Note: “Elementary students view content when projected by a teacher logged into WCPSS Google account.” Students cannot freely view videos on YouTube. However, staff may share specific videos with students.

As a best practice, use Safeshare or ViewPure to remove all YouTube ads prior to sharing videos with students. Alternatively, use the Quietube extension on your Chrome browser. This extension can be used to turn off all comments and ads. Instructions for using the Quietube extension can be found here in this video.
