Special Schools, Resource Centres and Special Care Centres
Help me succeed in school and I will succeed in life!
EVERY CHILD WANTS TO ACHIEVE
When we remove barriers and give every child a chance to succeed, we help make our communities stronger.
If we help students gain knowledge and skills in school, we’ll give them the confidence to pursue their goals in life and help them create a better life for their own families—and contribute to better communities for all of us.
THE ROLE OF PUBLIC SPECIAL SCHOOLS AS RESOURCE CENTRES
The vision statement of the National Department of Education reads: “ Our vision is of a South Africa in which all our people have access to lifelong learning and training opportunities, which will in turn contribute towards improving the quality of life and building a peaceful, prosperous and democratic society.”
This is indicated in Education White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education: Building an Inclusive Education and Training System (EWP6) where a radical transformation of the existing system and a new way of thinking regarding the role of Special Schools as Resource Centres is advocated.
EWP6 indicates that the future role of Special schools is critical in the transformation to inclusive education. The new resource centres (special schools) will provide improved educational support services to targeted learners and educators.
SPECIAL SCHOOLS
Provide an effective educational provision for learners experiencing barriers to learning and development.
