ABOUT AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a range of conditions characterised by some degree of impaired social behaviour, communication and language, a narrow range of interests and activities that are both unique to the individual and carried out repetitively. ASDs begin in childhood and tend to persist into adolescence and adulthood. The level of intellectual functioning in individuals with ASDs is extremely variable. Signs are usually observed in the early childhood years.

One out of 54 children are being born with ASD worldwide. The increase in prevalence rates does not necessarily mean that Autism is on the rise. Rather, it is likely that increased Autism awareness and understanding, with resultant changes to the diagnostic criteria, has led to better identification of Autism characteristics

It is imperative that people with Autism have access to specialist services that understand their needs and are experienced in developing their skills and strengths. Early recognition, as well as behavioral, educational and family therapies may reduce symptoms and support development and learning.
