HOSPITAL SCHOOLS

A hospital school operates in a hospital; generally, a children's hospital which provides instruction to all primary and secondary grade levels. These schools help children regain academic progress during periods of hospitalization or rehabilitation.

The schools are accredited and run by the local public-school system, funded by the state, and are based on the same curriculum and assessment mandated by the state as is practical for the students. Enrollments are low when compared to traditional schools and teachers must provide instruction for many grade levels.

In the Western Cape Province of South Africa three hospital schools operate under the supervision of another special school. The other four of the major hospitals

Special Schools provide effective educational support to learners experiencing barriers to learning and development. Learners who are admitted for periods of hospitalization or rehabilitation attend Hospital Schools where teachers provide instruction for many different grade levels.

Each hospital school received ten (10) Classmates (hybrid laptop with detachable tablets screen). CAMI (computer aided maths instruction) is installed on each device.

Hospital school staff obtain a curriculum status update of each child who is in the hospital. The base school class teacher, the learner support official at the district office and the hospital co-operate to facilitate the curriculum activities of the learner.
