A Special Care Centre cares for children with severe to profound intellectual and physical disabilities. This is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) registered as a Partial Day Care facility with Department of Social Development.

The Centre manager oversees a group of care givers who provide care and stimulation programmes under the guidance of a outreach team of professional staff.

The National Learning Programme for children with profound intellectual disability is offered by a team of professional support staff.


How is a child referred to a Special Care Centre

Each Special Care Centre has their own criteria for admission of a child. Medical facilities (hospitals and clinics) refer children to special care centres. Applications are done by parents. The contact details of Special Care Centres is contained in the list below.

Child needs to be supported with all activities and becomes aware of what is happening around him.

The child can participate but some support is needed

OUTREACH SUPPORT TEAMS

The Western Cape Education Department: Six (6) Outreach Support teams support sixty three (63) Special Care Centres. A team has a speech therapist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, special needs teacher and a psychologist.
