Directly approaching employers
• Speaking to someone in person is a good way to get your foot in the door with an employer.
• You could start local – e.g. local shops and cafes. You visit them with your CV which has been written to target that kind of work.
• For a supermarket go in and ask to speak to the supervisor about any opportunities now or in the future. Take your CV!
• Follow up if you haven’t heard back from them – phone call to check if their situation has changed and let them know you are still available.
• Be prepared – can lead to on the spot conversations/interviews!
• Keep records of company, people contacted, dates to help you follow up.
Work for yourself
• Babysitting
• Lawn mowing/gardening
• Home help/cleaning
• Fixing things around people’s homes (if have good practical skills)
• Dog walking
• Tutoring (in your strong subjects)
• Website design
