The World Languages & Cultures Department develops global citizens who communicate across cultures with empathy and confidence. Students learn to connect with others through language while exploring diverse traditions and perspectives.
Courses emphasize communication, cultural understanding, adaptability, and global awareness through immersive and interactive learning experiences.
World Language coursework supports the Portrait of a Wayzata Graduate by cultivating empathy, communicating effectively, intercultural competence, and lifelong learning.
Students should consider prerequisites and prior performance when registering for World Languages courses, as levels beyond Level 1 require demonstrated readiness, typically a sustained “B” or higher. Continued study in a single language is strongly encouraged, as longer sequences lead to greater proficiency and align with most college admissions recommendations of 2–4 years. Students may take multiple levels of the same language in one year or study more than one language during grades 9–12.

The class is highly interactive, filled with fun activities such as learning new songs, performing skits, and occasionally watching a Mandarin movie. Initially, I was worried about my ability to succeed in this class, but it prepared me very well for the AP Exam. I continue to speak Spanish whenever possible. The curriculum was very engaging, and I strongly recommend this class!"
