The Visual Arts Department develops creative thinkers who communicate ideas, solve problems, and reflect thoughtfully on their own work and that of others. Students grow into more confident creators as they explore personal expression and cultural perspectives through visual media.
Courses emphasize creativity, critical thinking, and reflection through sustained artistic practice grounded in the elements and principles of art and design. As students progress, they learn to take creative risks, refine their voice, and connect artistic choices to broader contexts. Students progress through levels from foundational skills in Level 1 to developing a personal style in Level 3, and to engaging in sustained investigations in Advanced and AP courses. Level 1–3 classes last one term, while Advanced and AP courses last two terms. All Visual Arts courses fulfill the Fine Arts graduation requirement. Some courses include small material fees.
Through Visual Arts coursework, students build skills and dispositions aligned with the Portrait of a Wayzata Graduate, including creativity, communication, and cultural awareness.
