This program follows Minnesota's state-required curriculum to prepare students for the CNA exam, which includes both a written test and a skills assessment. The course includes over 75 hours of classroom instruction, skills testing sessions with a registered nurse (usually on Thursdays), and 16 hours of clinical experience at an off-campus facility, typically a long-term care center. The clinical site will be assigned by the instructor. We are confident that this course will provide students with the essential skills, hands-on experience, and a strong foundation to pursue a rewarding healthcare career.
Given the professional nature of this program, the following expectations apply:
Attendance: Daily and punctual attendance is mandatory. Absences require a doctor’s note or school authorization. Instructors and Long-Term Care Facilities will set the schedule for Supervised Practical Training (SPT), during which students must arrive on time, wear the proper uniform, and meet behavioral expectations. Students who are ill or contagious must stay home, consult instructors, and provide proof of recovery if required.
Skills Assessments: Skills assessments must be completed on their scheduled dates. Conflicts must be addressed at least one week in advance to arrange alternatives.
Clinical (SPT) Requirements: Completing 16 hours of clinicals is a mandatory component of this course.
School Requirements: Students missing more than 10 days (5 per term) are ineligible to complete the CNA exam through Wayzata High School.
Health and Safety: Students will receive infection prevention training and be supervised by a nurse during clinicals. Health and liability insurance are recommended. Families are responsible for medical expenses resulting from illness or injury.
Testing Fee: Taking the MN CNA exam at the end of this course is optional. If your student chooses to take it, it will cost approximately $260.
Additional Requirements:
Completion of a DHS background check ($55 fee).
Fingerprinting with background check ($10.50 fee).
Completion of a 2-STEP Mantoux or TB Gold test, flu vaccine, and school immunization record.
More information regarding the logistics of background checks and timing of TB testing will be communicated by the teacher through a ParentSquare message.
Proper uniform: scrubs, closed-toe shoes, and a watch with a second hand for class, skills testing, and clinical.
Participation in clinicals.
Transportation arrangements for clinicals and submission of a transportation/liability form.
Current, valid photo ID. Students must provide a non-expired, government-issued photo ID (such as a permit, driver’s license, or U.S. passport). If your student does not have one, they will need both their birth certificate and Social Security Card for fingerprinting during the background check. Please ensure they have the necessary identification before the class starts.
