tell why April's full moon is called the pink moon.
count, sort, and graph pink objects in my neighborhood.
create an artistic representation of the pink moon.
THINK ABOUT IT:
Every full moon has it’s own name. Why do you think April’s full moon is called the pink moon?
LEARN ABOUT IT:
Did you know that April’s full moon is called a pink moon? Not because the moon is actually pink, but because around this timethe moss pink, or wild ground phlox, is in blossom. The name was used by the Algonquin tribe, as well as by colonial Americans. So every year, a traditional name for the full Moon in April is the Pink Moon.
moss pink - phlox
Try going on a walk, hike, or look out of your window for all of the pink things you can find blooming right now. You can collect some of these blossoms or record what you find using tally marks. What is the biggest pink thing you can find? What is the smallest? Which smells the best? Which holds the most mystery?
TRY IT:
Make a record of all of the pink things you have found. This can be a physical graph or a written graph. If you were able to collect some pink objects sort them and then make a physical graph of your objects. Which object did you find the most of? Which did you find the least of? Can you make a math story problem with the objects in your graph? (I found 8 phlox blossoms and 3 magnolia petals. How many more phlox did I find?)
PROJECT:
Create your own representation of the pink moon. You can use the objects you found, draw a pink moon, or make a 3D representation of the moon.
Listen to a song about the Pink Moon while you work!
