150 Acts of Green

Happy Earth Week! Did you know that this Wednesday is the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day? The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for a national day to focus on the environment after Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, witnessed the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969.

Happy Birthday Earth Day!

Think kids can't make a difference? Check out these student activists doing just that!

Baltimore Beyond Plastic is a local student led group.

This Earth Week we are challenging our Watershed community to commit 150 #WPCS150ActsofGreen, one for each student. Make sure you post your Act of Green on social media with the hashtag #WPCS150ActsofGreen so we can count it! Tag us too!

What is an act of green and how can you participate? It's anything you can do to promote sustainability and protect the Earth!

Some ideas:

  • Organize a neighborhood clean up (while exercising social distancing)

  • Plant a tree

  • Plant a wildlife and pollinator habitat-- get FREE seeds here from our friends at the National Wildlife Federation

  • Find out more about your carbon footprint

  • Make a window or lawn sign to tell your neighbors more about protecting the Earth

  • Ride a bike instead of driving

  • Wash laundry in cold water instead of hot then line dry!

  • Pledge to stop using disposable, one-use items and opt for reusable instead. This can include plastic bags, cups, bottles and more.

  • Work to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible.

  • Make art with recycled materials

  • What other ideas can you think of? The sky is the limit!
